Frequently Asked Questions
Answers to the most common questions about the Vidler Road landfill and our campaign.
The questions we hear most…
-
Existing site is poorly situated —
Geologically — on fractured limestone close to underground aquifers running to iconic beaches of Yallingup and Smiths.
Located next to Cape Naturaliste national park and within 3km of Dunsborough and Yallingup towns.
Location — over 60km from Busselton where majority of waste is coming from; leads to excessive truck traffic and higher safety risk issues and costs.
The Vidler Road site should be converted to a waste transfer station with the landfill relocated to a more appropriate location.
No planning or formal assessment ever performed at site.
-
Yes, it is along with:
Managing the Shires environment, which means ensuring proper EPA assessments and considerations of better suited landfill sites.
Professional planning to ensure most effective waste management.
Development of a long-term waste management strategy.
Transparency with and seeking input/consultation of ratepayers.
-
Unsure as none have ever been published by Council.
Council needs to develop a strategy that includes the consideration of alternative sites.
-
The CNCA supports better waste management and resource recovery, not simply making the problem worse or relocating a problem without proper assessments being made.
A thorough review is needed and the results made public allowing for community consultation and feedback.
Vidler Road should be considered a potential waste transfer site for Dunsborough and surrounding residential areas.
-
Council have advised certain residents nearby Vidler Road that their bore water should not be used for drinking, just lawn use.
-
Up to 100,000 tonnes of landfill and liquid waste will continue to be dumped at Cape Naturaliste.
The license to operate the tip is due to expire in 2030, however it is understood the Busselton council intends to apply for yet another extension to continue to dump at the Cape for decades to come.

Please write to the Mayor or use the online formal complaints link (https://www.busselton.wa.gov.au/council/customer-service/compaints.aspx) outlining your concerns.
You don’t need to be a ratepayer to be concerned about one of WA’s iconic areas being contaminated.
It is also useful to send a copy of any correspondence to admin@capenaturaliste.community so that we can track and record complaints.
